Russell Simmons who is best known for founding Def Jam and playing the uncle on MTV’s Run’s House, actually conceived the idea for Vibe Magazine and sold Quincy Jones on bringing it to life with him. But Simmons backed out before the magazine launched, telling journalist David Mills, “they didn’t hire one straight black man to work on that magazine. I didn’t meet one straight black man.”
Simmons would go on to found two doomed online publications: long-gone 360HipHop.com and the suspiciously named GlobalGrind.com.

Sounds like Vibe started life as a gay/female run magazine.
The turnover on the staff had to be like 800 percent since then, tho.
